Richt interested in another coaching job
McGarity met with Richt on Sunday morning.
ATHENS, Georgia – Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said he came to the decision to fire longtime football coach Mark Richt while driving home from Saturday’s 13-7 victory at rival Georgia Tech.
“Mark Richt’s been a really good coach and a really positive person in our profession for a long, long time. I wanted to wait until the season was over and that was the time”.
“In the past 15 years if I’ve had a headhunter call me and say: ‘Are you interested in this job, are you interested in that job, or whatever job that may be, it’s always been a real simple answer for me, to say no, this is where I want to be”, Richt said on his radio show. “A handshake means something around here”, McGarity said. “I want to wish Katharyn and the Richt family all the best”. We have to understand it is part of the business.
“That’s the standard here”, Richt said. A coaching job at Georgia is considered a prominent position due to excellent program that allowed it to have a good number of players enter the National Football League draft.
McGarity said Sunday that Richt “has the opportunity to remain on our staff at the University of Georgia, and would be heavily involved with outreach programs for our former football lettermen via the PO Network as well as other University and Athletic Association initiatives”.
“There may be more opportunities that come in the next 24 to 48 hours”.
At one point on Monday, Houston coach Tom Herman said he had “agreed in principle” to a new contract with the Cougars. He was saying please take this cup from me, he prayed it three times. “That’s kind of my thoughts over the last couple of weeks”. But after 15 years of winning in the SEC without a real national title run and losing important games over the years where the Bulldogs seemed like a slam dunk to win the conference or division title, winning or competing for those goals weren’t enough.
However, the most important thing for Richt right now is not what the future brings for him.
There is one other major difference in Fulmer and Richt.
Richt will coach Georgia in its bowl game.
Since 2011, Richt’s records at Georgia: 10-4, 12-2, 8-5, 10-3 and 9-3 this season going into a bowl he said he will coach, which begs the question about recruiting until then. Richt stated throughout the news source conference in that he expected to “have a lot of options to weigh”. Even if the Bulldogs get spurned by several coaches, someone should be able to step in and find immediate success in Athens. “You chose Georgia for a reason, and it was for more than just me or (offensive coordinator Brian) Schottenheimer”. “It’s a benchmark that not a lot of guys get to have”.
The problem Mark Richt faced was two-fold, unrealistic expectations from Dawg fans and playing in the most competitive conference in the nation. “Good husband, good father, good citizen of our country, and hopefully a leader”. We’ll see what happens. “If it wasn’t offered to me, I would have asked for it. I’m very excited about that”. I think decisions of this nature are very hard.
