Rick Perry’s Campaign: We’re Not Dead Yet

After raising just over $1 million as of the end of June, reports say the former longtime Texas governor has stopped paying his staff, suggesting that his funds are all but drained.

“The super PAC is allowed to do all of the traditional activities of a campaign, other than pay for the staff and pay directly for the travel of the candidate”, he says. Perry was also relegated to the second-string Republican debates last week, despite an advertising push.

But a relaxed Barbour – speaking via phone from the porch of his Jacksonville, Miss. home as the mailman came in – said the super PACs could pick up the slack and would be focusing on Iowa as key to Perry’s presidential hopes.

“This field is so fluid”.

Meanwhile, a group of Opportunity and Freedom super PACs promoting Perry’s candidacy – which are in far healthier state financially, having raised nearly million by mid-July – are planning to compensate for the shrinking campaign.

Perry is a former Texas governor who also ran for president in 2012.

The Washington Post, citing campaign and Super PAC officers in addition to different Republicans conversant in Perry’s operations, stated fundraising for two-time presidential candidate had dried up. The editorial praised Perry for laying out “a rationale and a specific agenda for how the GOP can earn-and deserve-the support of black Americans”, and for pointing to real-world evidence from Texas that his ideas could work.

The financial reform speech wasn’t the first time that Rick Perry had given a big speech that challenged conservatives as well as liberals. “This time he’s the tortoise”, argued Barbour, who is an informal consultant to Perry but was never on the campaign payroll.

“We saw in the campaign finance reports that they didn’t raise as much as anyone would have liked, and we knew what that meant — that they were going to have to go lean and mean while we would need to diversify what we were doing to help the governor”, Barbour said.

Stefan Passantino is a partner with the law firm Dentons and the treasurer for the Opportunity and Freedom PAC, which has more than $10 million ready to back Perry.

“The good news for Perry is that he’s very good at retail politics because he actually likes people and talking to them and is an extremely warm, caring and forthright guy, unlike some candidates for higher office”, Mair said.

Texas-based GOP strategist Matt Mackowiak said that Cruz’s rise, combined with Perry’s financial struggles, difficulty at rebranding himself and a still-looming indictment, have been “the ideal storm”.
