Ricky Gervais defends Caitlyn Jenner joke — Golden Globes
Henson told the audience that she always thought that she might have won for one of her previous roles, but she never expected that the role of a woman “who spent 17 years in jail for selling crack” would lead to her first Golden Globe win. The film’s director/writer/producer Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu thanked the “Native Americans who helped make this film possible”. And Matt Damon, who plays the title character – an astronaut stranded on Mars – won Best Comedy Actor.
To be clear, “The Martian” – The Globes’ victor for Best Comedy this year – is NOT a comedy. Also snubbed was The Big Short, based on a book about the financial crisis of 2007-2008. Critics darlings “Carol” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” were surprisingly shut out as well. Even Aziz Ansari, nominated for Master Of None, was hiding his face in a “How To Lose To Jeffrey Tambor With Dignity” book while his name was being announced.
But it is also a more raucous and risk-filled affair than the Academy Awards, starting with the humor of the host.
One person that did react pretty well to one of Ricky’s jokes however, was Jennifer Lawrence when he said: “Jennifer Lawrence made the news when she demanded equal pay for women and she received overwhelming support from people everywhere”.
Gervais’ snark aside, the Golden Globes have worked for years to shed an image of eccentric selections made by a group of little-known worldwide journalists.
The Golden Globes were handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at a glitzy Beverly Hills dinner packed with A-list celebrities. He went on thank his director for his leadership and vision, as well as the cast and crew in the film.
“She’s gonna be fine”, Lawrence said backstage.
What’s become amusing is how influential they are now on bigger, more important, ceremonies like the Oscars.
The night is split in two categories: Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, which allows less competition.
Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle was considered to be the underdog during the awards ceremony going up against last year’s victor Transparent (also an Amazon original), HBO’s Veep, Silicon Valley, Hulu’s Casual and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black.
Director of “The Revenant” Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu was very humbled after winning the “Best Director” award at the Golden Globes.
Sylvester Stallone knocked out some heavyweight competition, too, in the supporting actor category with a win for “Creed”, beating out Idris Elba (“Beasts of No Nation“), Michael Shannon (“99 Homes”), Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”), and Paul Dano (“Love & Mercy”).
Trying to win the crowd round, Ricky mentioned that he’s “changed”.
“I like a drink just as much as the next man”, Gervais said at the time. “Mr. Robot” beat out shows like “Game of Thrones” and “Empire” in the drama and supporting actor categories. In his eloquent acceptance speech, DiCaprio remarked, “Wow”. In fact, he was quick to compare himself to Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who was re-captured on Friday by Mexican law enforcement.
Denzel Washington took to the stage with his family to collect the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. Gervais joked that after he was done hosting the Golden Globes, he’d be more of a target than El Chapo.
