Ricky Gervais defends Golden Globes Caitlyn joke in Twitter rant
The joke has caused a storm of outrage among the “transgender” community.
“What a year she’s had”, Gervais began. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything, can you?’
Admittedly, it could have been worse, but still.
During the monologue, Ricky Gervais made light of former Olympian Bruce Jenner’s transformation to his new identity Caitlyn Jenner. When will it end?
Gervais, yet again, was accused of making offensive jokes when he hit the awards show stage for the fourth time as host, and tweeted in defense of his quips about Caitlyn Jenner. Tell us what you think in the comments section below and watch Ricky’s speech here.
He continued: “Suggesting a joke about Caitlyn Jenner is automatically transphobic is like suggesting a joke about Bill Cosby is automatically racist”.
“I’m going to nice tonight“, he said.
Gervais began innocently enough, joking about the fact that Damon’s film The Martian is up for an award in the Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) category, before moving on to roast Damon’s BFF. Just don’t cry when no one cares’. Replied Gervais, “But it WAS Bruce Jenner who changed”.
Gervais went on to personally defend his joke against one upset follower.
He also tweeted, “You have every right to be offended”. Jenner pulicly announced her gender transition in April 2015, later posing for a now iconinc Vanity Fair cover photo shoot with photographer Annie Leibovitz. Into Caitlyn Jenner. And I respect that.
