Ricky Gervais Wants You to Think He Won an Emmy Tonight
On cue, a woman came on stage to give Gervais an Emmy. The smart money’s on [Mark] Rylance or [Timothy] Hutton.
So when the 22-time nominee (two-time winner) took to the stage beforehand to present Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, he said: “Back again to lose another one”.
The British star was nominated for Channel 4′s Derek as outstanding lead actor in a mini-series or movie, but went home empty-handed. He had the idea if people saw him on stage, holding an Emmy, they’d think he did win this year.
“When I won the Oscar for something, acting or something, something like that”, Gervais continued, “um, everyone thought Daniel Day-Lewis had won it. He hadn’t, he just acted like he had, so that’s what I’ve done”.
Later, he added: “In fact, can I have an Emmy?” “Can I get an Emmy?” he looked over his shoulder. But even without a statue Gervais was the night’s real victor, after all his moment probably is the one we’ll all still remember by the time next year’s ceremony rolls around.
“Thank you so much”, Gervais said through faked tears, as if overcome with a flood emotions upon receiving the award.
“So take a picture of that”, he said, hoisting it in the air.
Gervais then went on to do his actual duty for the night, presenting “Veep’s” Tony Hale with the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
“Tweet that and Bob’s your uncle, right?”
