Ridley Scott, Adam McKay among Directors Guild nominations
Inarritu also has a DGA nomination for Babel (2006).
Mexico’s Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Britain’s Ridley Scott on Tuesday topped the list of nominees for the Directors Guild of America (DGA) award – a strong indicator of Oscar hopes. While their nomination fields might differ, since 2001, only two directors lost the Oscar and won the DGA award. The nominees often match up five to five, but variations are possible-last year the D.G.A. nominated Clint Eastwood for American Sniper but the Oscar nominations went to Foxcatcher’s Bennett Miller instead.
Carol director Todd Haynes, Bridge of Spies’ Steven Spielberg or Sicario’s Denis Villeneuve could have muddled things if one of them slipped in – and helped their films case to round out the Best Picture category.
Sir Ridley Scott has been nominated for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement In Feature Film prize at the Directors Guild of America Awards. We’ll see how much the Academy agrees with these picks when Oscar nominations are announced Thursday morning.
In any case, the Writers, Producers, Directors and Screen Actors guilds have all given their nominations, with Spotlight and The Big Short the only films to be nominated by all four guilds.
In the new category, the nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Director are Fernando Coimbra, “A Wolf at the Door”; Joel Edgerton, “The Gift”; Alex Garland, “Ex Machina”; Marielle Heller, “The Diary of a Teenage Girl”; and Laszlo Nemes, “Son of Saul”.
The DGA Awards will be presented February 6 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel, in a ceremony hosted by Jane Lynch. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
