Rihanna to earn Michael Jackson video award at MTV VMAs
The pop/R&B powerhouse is being recognized for her 10-year impact in the music, fashion and film worlds as well as her philanthropic endeavors.
Previous recipients of the coveted award include the likes of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Kanye West.
Rihanna fans seething that the singer didn’t make it into the video of the year race at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards should fret not: The singer is set to get the night’s highest honour.
Rihanna, 28, has twice won the coveted video of the year at the MTV ceremony and is an eight-time Grammy victor with more than 61 million albums sold.
Here’s hoping Rihanna has something just as memorable up her sleeve.
Named for late King of Pop Michael Jackson, the Video Vanguard Award recognizes contributions to music and pop culture and is not given every year.
Details about Rihanna’s performance plans have yet to be revealed.
RiRi has four nominations this year – Best Female Video for “Work” featuring Drake, Best Male Video for Calvin Harris’ “This Is What Your Came For” (in which she is featured), and Best Collaboration Video for both of the aforementioned hit songs.
Last year’s victor Kanye West gave an award-worthy acceptance speech.
The Bajan beauty has previously won two Video Music Awards and sold more than 61 million albums, making her one of the best-selling artists of all time.
