Ringing Bells to import first 50 lakh phones
The Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DEiTY) has today summoned top officials of Ringing Bells, the Noida-based company that created quite a stir by announcing the launch of Freedom 251, arguably the world’s cheapest smartphone.
According to sources, the department has obtained documents, including those from the Registrar of Companies (RoC), in this regard. The Freedom 251 was launched with much fanfare last week and the event was launched by senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi.
Executives including company president Ashok Chadha and director Mohit Goel met officials of the Ministry of Communications and IT and explained the viability of their model. “This is not the final piece”. There were allegations that the company had showcased a rival company, Adcom’s handset, as its own.
The Times of India has reported that some people are selling vouchers for the Freedom 251 across Noida, claiming to assure a delivery of the phone once registered. “We are now closing the invitation to bookings in this phase 1”, the company has said. We try and look at the 5 things that you must know before buying Freedom 251.
The company officials met the telecom officials after Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad sought a report about the credentials of the firm.
The world’s cheapest smartphone is being commercialised in India at around $4 only.
Lastly, with questions being raised over the promised price of Rs 251 for a 3G smartphone by new entrant Ringing Bells, the Telecom Ministry has found that a device with such specifications would cost about Rs 2,300. “By going for Made in India components, we can save on the 13.8 per cent duty. This will also help us to bring down the cost”. Chaddha also rejected speculation of the handset being subsidised by the government.
