Rio 2016: Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu wins third gold in four days
NBC presenter Dan Hicks has come under fire after suggesting that an Olympic swimmer husband, rather than herself, was responsible for her gold medal.
Katinka Hosszu of Hungary won her second gold medal of the 2016 Olympic Games, after winning zero medals in her prior three appearances.
Great Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor took silver at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in 2:06.88.
Katie Meili of the United States took the bronze, with London 2012 champion Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania fading in the second length to finish seventh.
She also broke the world record in the 400 medley in Rio and was a surprise victor of the 100m backstroke, joining an elite group of female swimmers to have won three individual gold medals at a single Olympics.
Hosszu, who returned little more than an hour later to book her spot in tomorrow’s 200m medley final, said she wasn’t feeling any pressure from her heavy schedule, which also includes the 200m backstroke and 200m butterfly.
“Pretty sure that’s the closest I’ve come to throwing up in the middle of a race”, the teenager said.
Hosszu was having none of it – snubbing the reporter who wrote the story in a post-200 medley press conference as she aimed a steely look at her husband in the back of the room.
The others who grabbed gold were China’s Sun Yang in the men’s 200 metres freestyle, United States Ryan Murphy in the men’s 100 metres backstroke and Lilly King in the women’s 100 metres breaststroke. She finished in an Olympic record of 2 minutes 6.12 seconds.
“I don’t think I had my best race, but this is what we’ve been working for the last four years”, she said.
“She skipped the butterfly to have spare energy for the 200 IM”, Hungarian Swimming Federation attache Gergely Csurka told Reuters.
At the 2012 London Games, Hosszu was expected to shine. I’m just very excited. If she wins, she’ll tie East German Kristin Otto’s mark of four individual golds.
“I was so nervous, so afraid, what if I don’t win a medal?” she recalled. Before leaving the poolside, she patted the Russian on the back.
And she still has the 200m backstroke yet to go in Rio.
