Rio 2016 men’s gymnastics live stream, TV for individual all-around Wednesday
Gold medal victor Japan’s Kohei Uchimura sings his national anthem flanked by silver medal victor Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev, left, and Britain’s Max Whitlock, bronze right, during the artistic gymnastics men’s individual all-around final at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016.
Kohei Uchimura concedes he thought his Olympic title was lost after a thrilling, narrow victory ahead of Oleg Verniaiev in gymnastics. Verniaiev took silver, and Great Britain’s Max Whitlock took bronze. At 42, Armstrong is also the oldest female Olympic cyclist to win a gold medal, a topic she addressed shortly after her victory.
There’s time. Uchimura will take a break following the Rio Games but has no plans to retire.
“I never knew where I was placing at all. I was calm and that was the key to my success”. “I think that today together we managed to put together an unbelievable show”.
But even if he had doubts, his rivals were not so sure.
Speaking to ITV News he said: “I’m so happy, but relieved too”.
“This time was really the trickiest for me”, Uchimura said.
Uchimura has 19 world medals, including 10 in gold, and is the first gymnast to have won every all-around gold in an Olympic cycle – a feat he has achieved twice.
Cycling time trials are among the highlights on what promises to be a captivating day five at the Olympic Games on Wednesday and the first rowing medals are due to be awarded in Rio weather permitting.
The 23-year-old won Great Britain’s first all-around gymnastics Olympics medal in 108 year with a bronze.
“To stay at a level and at the top for that many years is a hard job”.
It was Verniaiev who has come closest to doing what no one has been able to do in eight years – beat Uchimura in an all-around competition. In an electric arena, Verniaiev stepped up to his own high bar routine.
Mikulak will start the all-around final on pommel horse and end on floor, while Brooks will start on still rings and end on pommel horse.
A massive 16.1 by Verniaiev on parallel bars threw down the challenge to Uchimura, who replied with a 15.600.
Coming into the high bar, both Verniaiev’s and Uchimura’s final event of the six-event circuit, Uchimura needed to ace his routine and hope Verniaiev had some blemishes.
But after all his years of soaring tumbles and high-flying routines, Uchimura still loves putting on a good show above all.
Trailing Ukrainian Oleg Verniaiev by nine-tenths of a point going into the final rotation, the 2012 all-around gold medalist scored 15.800 on the horizontal bar to pull into first with 92.365 overall points.
In qualifying, Verniaiev competed what was probably the best meet of his life and finished 1.5 points above Uchimura in the standings while the reigning Olympic champ counted a fall on high bar.
“At the moment, he is the king of gymnastics like Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt in their sports, a multiple champion”, said Verniaiev. Both fell off the pommel horse in the preliminaries, but could get close to the podium if they get flawless scores.
