Following a patient start at Deodoro Stadium, Goto opened the scoring in the third minute, only for New Zealand to hit back through Scott Curry, Gillies Kaka’s conversion making it 7-7 at the break.

Japan lost to Great Britain 19-21 in their second pool match.

It was a day of shocks in the sevens, with Australia beaten first up by France, 31-14.

Title favourites Fiji conceded an early try to Brazil but ran out 40-12 winners in their opening game.

Japan are ranked 10th of the 12 teams in the men’s sevens, but they performed brilliantly to stun New Zealand.
