Rio 2016: Security investigating reports of bullet in equestrian center
It appears the bullet was not shot intentionally at the tent, with it more likely it was sacked from a distance.
Not long after, Brazilian police confirmed that they were investigating reports that a bullet was shot into the media centre of the equestrian arena.
The equestrian press tent is adjacent to a military base and may have encountered a stray bullet.
The incident reportedly occurred around lunch, a relatively busy time in the tent as equestrian writers were recapping the morning’s dressage event.
“It was a stray bullet and has nothing to do with the Games”, Mario Andrada said at a news conference, adding that security around the venue had been increased as a precaution.
“The NZ Olympic committee immediately contacted the NZ police team security liaison who has asked all New Zealand athletes and staff to remain in the venue in an enclosed space”.
Meanwhile, a bomb squad is investigating after an apparent blast shook the area near the finish line of the men’s cycling road race.
Rio also has a reputation for gun crime and there were two fatal shootings near Olympic venues on Friday, including one outside the Maracana stadium where the opening ceremony took place.
