Rio diving pool changes color from blue to green overnight
Some of the more far-fetched and disgusting reasons as to why the Olympic pool changed to a puke-green hue include Brazil’s national pride, a possible Ghostbusters advertising tie-in and, yes, urine.
On Tuesday, the attention quickly turned to the water in the diving pool, which seemed to change from a cool blue to a slime green overnight.
British diver Tonia Couch said the pool’s water was so green she couldn’t see her partner Lois Toulson underwater, The Times reported.

Most worryingly for competitors, however, is that the water in the polo pool, just metres away, remains a healthy-looking shade of blue.
On Wednesday, however, officials decided an algae bloom was to blame, prompted by plenty of heat and no wind.

“It’s great that they’re saying there’s no safety threat to the divers”, said Mr Riley.
“As a result the pH level of the water was outside the usual range, causing the discoloration”, said the organisation in a statement. “We did all the chemical tests”.
Water quality has been a major issue surrounding the Rio Olympics, but in the ocean and lagoons, not the venue pools.
However, it is not unusual for Olympic pool systems to be switched off for a brief period, Riley noted.
However, Rio spokesman Mario Andrada told the Associated Press that the culprit behind the color change was “a proliferation of algae”. I think when the sun down it was worse. It’s not like it’s toxic or dirty or any of that.
Chen Ruolin, who teamed to win gold with Liu Huixia, said it didn’t affect them.
“We probably failed to note that with more athletes, the water could be affected in a different way”, Andrada said.
But, as we’ve said, nobody really knows what is going on at the moment, but organisers have said they are looking into it.
As the competition progressed, the water looked more like pea green soup while the pool next to it – where water polo and synchronised swimming are held – remained in ideal health. “I hope it’s not a swamp”.
