Rio Olympics: Irish boxer Michael Conlan accuses judges of being ‘****ing cheats’
SOCIAL media went into a tailspin after Michael Conlan was controversially beaten in the Olympic quarter-final.
Conlan looked to have done enough to win the contest but the judges decided otherwise and he was far from happy after the decision was revealed. I’ve got a big career ahead of me and these, they’re known for being cheats.
Conlan, who is expected to turn professional after Rio, reacted furiously and stripped off his singlet and marched out of the arena – declaring that amateur boxing “stinks”.
“They’re f****** cheats, it’s as simple as that”, Conlan began in his RTE interview.
The Irishman had a better second, after which he dragged the scores level, but Nikitin got the verdict after smothering much of Conlan’s cleaner work and turning the last round into a brawl.
Interestingly, the statistics do back up the judge’s decision to award the first round to Nikitin as he landed 26 to the 72 punches he threw in comparison to 18 of Conlan’s 114.
‘I don’t give a f**k for cursing on TV.
Russian heavyweight Evgeny Tishchenko was booed when he won gold on Monday (NZT Tuesday).
His exit means that Ireland will go home without a medal from the ring, having travelled to Rio with high hopes for a number of fighters including Conlan, Katie Taylor and Paddy Barnes. My dream’s been shattered now.
Conlan grabbed bronze at London 2012 and has had plenty of offers to turn pro but the 24-year-old turned them down to win gold.
“I said before that I was going to be Olympic champion”.
“I thought I boxed the ears off him in the first round, but they scored it against me”.
“I watched Russian Federation last night in the final and by all means Kazakhstan beat him and didn’t get the decision”.
“His disappointment is massive, we can all understand that”.
