Rio Olympics: Phelps wins another gold, bows out with 28 Games medals
Michael Phelps closed out his Rio Olympics in the only way imaginable.
Yes, the act itself was familiar.
United States’ Michael Phelps reacts after the men’s 100-meter butterfly final during the swimming competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics, Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
America’s victory came just minutes after the women’s medley relay gave the United States its 1,000th Olympic gold medal at the Summer Games.
Phelps, Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller and Nathan Adrian combined to set an Olympic record with a time of 3:27.95, and Murphy got them going in the first leg.
But with just four medals in the first week of the Games -one gold, one silver and two bronze – Brazilian athletes will need to perform better to fulfil that objective.
Speaking of comebacks, Phelps insists he won’t be coming out of retirement again to take on Tokyo in 2020.
“My swimming career might be over, but I have the future ahead of me to turn the page and start whatever I want”.
Phelps is eager to spend a lot more time with them.
Great Britain, the 2015 world champions in the relay, claimed the silver while Australia took the bronze.
“I tried to go out faster and put out a gap between me and the others”.
Murphy’s time over the first 100m – 51.85 seconds – saw him break the world backstroke record.
Olympic all-around champion Simone Biles goes for her third gold in Rio when she competes in the women’s vault.
Venus Williams can become the first tennis player with five career Olympic golds, pairing with Rajeev Ram against Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock in an all-American mixed doubles final. “It’s a little nerve-wracking but at the same time I know that regardless of the outcome U.S. will be behind me and we’ll be behind each other”.
The first match of the Olympic wrestling tournament produced one of the biggest upsets of the Rio Games: Shinobu Ota of Japan stunned seven-time world champion and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Hamid Soryan of Iran 5-4 in the opening set of Greco-Roman bouts.
USA’s Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Dana Vollmer and Manuel won in 3:53.13.
“One thousand gold medals is a remarkable achievement made possible by the culture of sport that is the fabric and foundation of Team USA”, United States Olympic Committee (USOC) head Scott Blackmun said.
Earlier in the night, Manuel took silver in the 50 free.
The U.S. women won gold followed by Australia and Denmark. Dusmatov on Friday beat American Nico Hernandez, who will get bronze and end a medal drought for the USA that stretched to 2008.
“It turned out pretty cool”, Phelps said, another gold medal around his neck.
Detti rallied over the final laps to pass American Jordan Wilimovksy, who settled for fourth.
