This is the second penalty shootout loss for Australia at the Rio 2016 Games after the women’s football team suffered the same fate against hosts Brazil in their quarter-final.

Team USA is 4-0 in the Games, scoring in double figures in each of its past three victories and outscoring its opponents by a whopping 30 goals in its four wins.

The Americans are shooting 44 percent in the tournament, according to the Olympic web site. Steffens was trailed by teammates Maddie Musselman who added three goals and Courtney Mathewson who had two.

Despite the scoring prowess, the U.S.’s key to victory has been their defense.

It was, by all accounts, a great start to the tournament for Team USA, who rocketed out to a 7-2 lead after the first two quarters. Captain Maggie Steffens also scored twice, upping her already Rio leading goals total to 12. Bujka narrowed Australia’s lead to 1 with a goal at 5:36 on the clock.

The Hungarian driver did just that, throwing a shot past a diving Lea Yanitsas in goal for Australia to cap off the win for Hungary 13-11.

US coach Dejan Udovicic, who took over the program in May 2013, provided no indication that he would treat the finale any differently, but he could give more time to Thomas Dunstan and Ben Hallock to help with the growth process for the teenagers.

Hungary will meet the undefeated United States in the semifinal match on Wednesday. The 34-year-old Azevedo is playing in his fifth Olympics, a record for USA Water Polo, and it’s the fourth games for Smith, 33.

Coach Greg McFadden, who has led Australia to medals at the past two Games with thrilling wins over Hungary, is proud of the team and lamented being knocked-out by penalties.

Cardinal grad Kiley Neushul took advantage of a Hungary turnover to score for a 10-6 lead and then Steffens had another for an 11-6 score with 3:55 left in the quarter.

Stefano Tempesti and Mar Del Lungo have split time in goal for the Italian team, combining for 44 saves on 85 shot attempts.

Six different players have scored at least seven goals for Hungary in Rio. They’ve scored 40 goals, but allowed 41.

Moreover, by the time they reach the national team many players have already played with one another in global age-group tournaments, which also helps straighten out the learning curve.
