Rising health care costs a boon to others
“They haven’t really said why their forecast of Affordable Care Act [ACA] enrollment was wrong”, Furchtgott-Roth said, using another name for Obamacare. The new bill moves the ratio back to five to one, and gives states the option to set their own ratios.
Bottom line: When most people in MI and nationally say they want to “repeal and replace” the ACA, they do not necessarily want to lose coverage or return to the pre-ACA world.
“The solution to the American health care cost problem is changing the care, not throwing away the insurance”, Berwick told Herald Radio’s “Herald Drive” show with John Sapochetti and Rick Shaffer. Those requirements reduced insurers’ profitability to the point where many simply stopped offering health insurance.
The Republican plan does not repeal Indian health care, but tribes say it’s still too soon to feel relief. Ten million Americans, including 15,133 in District 8, now receive subsidies through the ACA.
The bill is now facing criticism from both sides of the aisle, and it’s still unclear how the bill might change before it lands on the President’s desk.
Before the ACA, California had one of the highest uninsured rates in the nation, and after the implementation of the healthcare reform, the state saw the greatest percentage reduction of its uninsured rate of any state. Then insurance companies would be willing to offer insurance in the exchange again. In California virtually no policies will qualify for the tax credits due to their coverage of abortion services!
“I think that we need to move to the free market in order to get these costs down for our citizens”, he said.
The plan also repeals a variety of corporate taxes and repeals two taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more: a 3.8 percent tax on investment income and a 0.9 percent tax on wages. I am fortunate to have health insurance through my work. Why would this plan include a tax break for the rich at the expense of the poor and middle class? Propose that as a system that could be supported by both parties.
Younger people would eventually pay lower premiums, but that’s because older (sicker) people would opt to be without coverage. Why?
Just over 12.2 million individuals signed up for Obamacare coverage in 2017, roughly half of what the Congressional Budget Office projected four years ago.
It’s true that having to help others sometimes costs a little more in the short term but in the long run we all end up better off. “Premiums would skyrocket, and even more than that, out of pocket costs would soar”.
