Rita Ora files suit against Jay Z’s label
The legal docs say the singer has plenty of music ready to go, but her label hasn’t released any of it. The gorgeous gal argues that her contract with Roc Nation could keep her locked in a sh*tty situation for another three years… maybe even longer.
THR has obtained the complaint that reads as follows, “When Rita signed, Roc Nation and its senior executives were very involved with her as an artist”. The move apparently left Rita in limbo as nobody at Sony gave a damn about her since Roc Nation showed they didn’t.
Shouting out Tidal as one of Jay Z’s diversions and calling herself “orphaned” in the complaint, Ora alleges that she’s “self-funding her promotional television appearances, recording costs and video projects”.
The code was successfully used by actress Olivia De Haviland in 1944 when she filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros, setting a precedent for future cases in the showbiz industry. In 2013, Roc Nation switched its distribution partner from Sony to Universal, but according to the lawsuit, she’s been left behind at Sony, which she paints as “hamstrung” by Roc Nation’s alleged inattention. Ora apparently had to stay with Sony, which apparently caused her relationship with Roc Nation to become “irrevocably damaged”. According to THR, the ruling fundamentally changed Hollywood and helped bring down the old studio system. Artists who cite the “Seven Year Rule” can be countersued by the record labels for “lost profits” on uncompleted albums.
Rita Ora is suing her label Roc Nation and its owner Jay Z, claiming that they’ve significantly hurt her career. Ora’s reps declined to comment on the story.
Rita Ora has had enough of boss and rumored lover Jay Z’s treatment.
