Rivals mock Trump for debate no-show
In the first clip, Trump trashes Ted Cruz as a “nasty guy” whom “nobody likes”.
Last-minute attempts by Fox News Channel to end its feud with Donald Trump failed and Thursday’s presidential debate went on without him, creating the odd spectacle of competing television networks covering a Trump rally at the same time as the other Republican candidates talked.
According to CNN, Mr Trump and a small number of legal scholars have claimed the Constitution’s “natural-born citizen” requirement necessitates the President must be born on U.S. soil.
Speculating on what skipping the last debate before the Iowa Caucuses might mean for his presidential aspirations, Trump admitted he wasn’t sure, but didn’t seem very anxious.
“Now, Ted Cruz may not be a US citizen”.
“He was a little teddy bear to me”, Bush said.
Colbert’s all-Trump debate took place on the same night that Trump boycotted Fox News’ GOP debate over issues with moderator Kelly and Fox News chairman Roger Ailes.
In the interview, Trump also offered some backhanded support for the idea that Jeb Bush had his best debate without the reality TV star present.
“We didn’t know anything about it”, Cruz’s communications director Rick Tyler told Boston Herald Radio about old footage aired during Fox News’s prime-time debate that showed Cruz backing an immigration bill that would have allowed undocumented immigrants to receive permanent status.
Colbert then used video footage of Trump’s frequently contradictory statements for a “mano a moutho” debate.
“Tonight it’s Donald versus Trump, or as their known by their celebrity couple name: Dump”, Colbert joked to the cheering crowd at the Ed Sullivan Theater.
Trump also knocked Cruz’s debate performance, saying that the Texan “got really pummeled” by the rest of the field. As a response, Fox News said that the network would not engage in a quid pro quo, nor could any money change hands for any reason.
“He got beaten up pretty badly last night”, Trump added. “I think she’s highly overrated.” .
‘I’m a maniac and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat and ugly, ‘ Cruz said. Cruz trailed in second with 16 percent, followed by Rubio at 13 percent.
