Rizzo homers in 4th straight game, Cubs beat Brewers 4
We’d have the tying run at the plate. I was throwing the ball really well, real firm. “We have to keep that rolling through August and September”.
Garza (5-12) gave up three runs on four hits in six innings for the Brewers.
Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo tags out Milwaukee Brewers’ Khris Davis after being caught in a rundown during the second inning of a baseball game Saturday, August 1, 2015, in Milwaukee.
Hunter ended up recording his first save as a member of the Cubs who have won four-straight for the first time since July 20-23. However, Schwarber should probably get an assist.
Key at-bat: Schwarber’s 11-pitch, third inning at-bat may have changed the game.
Corey Knebel worked a scoreless eighth with a walk and two strikeouts for the Brewers and Preston Guilmet made his Brewers debut in the ninth, striking out one in a 1-2-3 frame. He has now hit 13 in his career against Milwaukee, the most against any opponent. Fewer and fewer hitters are struggling right now – and the Cubs are starting to hit home runs – which could finally mean the streak that manager Joe Maddon has been waiting for is coming. More >.
Taylor Jungmann had an interesting start, giving up seven hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. Maybe they’re in it already as his team has won five of six, pushing their record to nine games over.500, tying a season high. Rookie catcher Kyle Schwarber, who has been filling in for the injured veteran Miguel Montero, padded Chicago’s lead later on in the game with a solo blast to right-center field. Jorge Soler is 5 for 12 with a home run and three doubles, while Kris Bryant is 0 for 6.
“Really not letting the stuff before affect me, not trying to do too much, not trying to go out there and paint corners and strike everybody out, just going to my strengths and let the defense do it job”, Nelson said.
Damage control: Rizzo’s homer was the big blow to Garza’s outing, but the right-hander found himself having to escape multiple jams. Starlin Castro drove in two runs with separate RBI-at bats. “I didn’t pitch near the way I would’ve liked to today”.
“I’ve been looking forward to August the whole year”. It’s hot in August. Overall, he is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in four career starts against the Cubs.
Chicago picked up two veteran right-handed pitchers, Dan Haren from the Marlins and Tommy Hunter from the Orioles. They’ll call on Clayton Richard to do so; I’m skeptical of his abilities but perhaps he’s got one good start in him before he heads back to Triple-A Iowa. This will be Richard’s fourth start with the Cubs. He allowed four runs twice (four earned once) and six runs once. He’s made four starts at Miller Park, and he is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA. First pitch is set for 6:10 Connecticut.
BREWERS: RHP Kyle Lohse (5-12) starts the series finale. The right-hander has surrendered at least one homer in 18 of his 21 starts. He has drawn comparisons to Chris Sale and features a fastball (that can touch 96), curveball, changeup mix that has played well at AA this season: 3.17 ERA, 9.5 K/9, 3.3 BB/9 in 65.1 innings pitched.
