Robbie Lawler Looks to Annihilate Carlos Condit at UFC 195
Robbie Lawler beat Carlos Condit via split decision (48-47, 48-47, 47-48) to retain his UFC welterweight title at UFC 195 in Las Vegas.
In Saturday’s championship fight, the pivotal swing round and the final frame where Lawler almost put Condit away were both scored 10-9 by all three judges and that’s a big part of the problem.
Going into the 5th round, Lawler and his team thought he was clearly behind on the scores and that he would need a knockout to secure the win.
Whether you had him winning or not, Lawler, a man seemingly prone to bloody slug fests, left fans and viewers with a feeling of amazement.
Lawler said he’s “not going to make a decision today” about when he can fight next after staging the 2015 fight of the year against Rory MacDonald, when in July Lawler rallied while down on the scorecards to knock out MacDonald in the fifth round.
Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit celebrate after their welterweight title fight on January 2.
Throughout his entire career with the UFC, Carlos Condit has faced a laundry list of champions, former champions and potential hall of famers but on the eve of his upcoming title fight he believes Robbie Lawler might be the most unsafe opponent of them all.
Lawler found his payback with a thunderous right hand in the second round, dropping Condit in the process. “I like creeping up on people, being the quiet guy just coming to fight, coming to go to war, coming to battle”.
“Come on, give me shot”. It is definitely worth noting a fighter’s weaknesses, but it is not something that Lawler would do based off of his fighting style and past fights. Miocic celebrated his victory by running across the cage to White and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, yelling at them to “Give me my shot!”
Miocic will now face whoever emerges triumphant from UFC 196 in February when current champion Fabricio Werdum has his rematch with Cain Velasquez. “I did it in good fashion, and I would like that”.
Lawler will inevitably one day get beat.
Condit is a well-rounded, crafty, intelligent fighter who (like Robbie) is willing to stand in the fire in order to get off with his own offense. Lawler won about twenty seconds of the entire second frame, but it was enough to gain him the round.
“I’ve been at this for a long time, over 40 professional MMA and kickboxing fights”. “But when it comes down to it and him getting in there and getting punched and in close quarters, like any fighter, that brawler comes out in him”. There were those that felt Lorenz Larkin had done enough to pip Albert Tumenov, but the Russian secured the win via a split-verdict as well.
