Robert De Niro Balks On ‘Autopilot Acting’ Question, Ends Interview
For her, the actor appeared “baffled and vaguely appalled” by Hathaway’s emotional outburst.
She later recalled the words he used during his follow-up questioning.
It’s why Hathaway’s drawn to producing “my own stuff – it’s practical”. I’ve also spoken with workers who, instead of retiring, have tapered off their hours to better suit their evolving sense of work-life balance. As Jules, Hathaway is smart and attractive, and yet she has few close relationships and colleagues she can depend on.
Yes, yes, yes! I want to yell, pumping my fist in the air.
But the actress, who was born in Brooklyn and raised in New Jersey, concedes this new chapter is “a little bit hard“.
“I’m sorry, I really don’t… what are we doing?” the actor said before leaving.
Anne Hathaway is excellently cast (and exceptionally dressed) in The Intern as Jules Ostin, a successful but uptight dot-com entrepreneur who likes to ride a bike around the office of the online fashion store she launched 18 months ago, and which now employs 216 people.
“The regeneration of Manhattans’ downtown area is insane, I say; to the extent that it’s all bankers now -” De Niro swivels his eyes up from the floor and asks me to pause the voice recorder.
‘The Intern’ is written and directed by Nancy Meyers.
“Jules doesn’t have some deep, dark secret”.
If you have admired his gift for playing characters who walk on the dark side in dramas such as Cape Fear (1991), Raging Bull (1980), The Deer Hunter (1978), Taxi Driver (1976) and The Godfather: Part II (1974), which each earned him an Oscar, it is startling to see him in something more light-hearted. Hathaway captioned a picture of the beauty products that went into her premiere look. He’s a sweet guy, and she’s a nice lady, and they quickly come to enjoy each other’s company, if only out of recognition of being unfairly maligned demographics: a 70-year-old put out to pasture and a driven female boss who also happens to be a wife and mom.
“So often in stories, the powerful woman is the ice queen and the working mum is a bad mother. I think it’s just about all of us cracking through every ceiling together”. “You’re so good at giving minimalist, ideal answers”, she laughs at one point.
The movie also explores the rise of a relatively new family dynamic. “Ben comes into her life and understands her immediately. Traditionally, the woman’s been the caregiver and the man the breadwinner, and now it’s up to the couple to decide for themselves”.
Q: What experience have you had with some of your interns and how will this change going forward?
