Robert De Niro plans to open a luxury hotel in London
The Associated Press reported the council has given De Niro and company the green light to construct the luxury property in London’s Covent Garden area.
The trio have created a brand new concept for Covent Garden, complete with luxury spa, two restaurants, a deli/café and member’s club built around a central courtyard conservatory.
It will be the renowned actor’s third hotel after his transition into hospitality saw him open a complex in NY and one in the Philippines.
Commenting on the project back in May, de Niro said “London is one of the most exciting and cosmopolitan cities in the world”.
The actor will be a joint operator of the premises which will span across six buildings, three of which are Grade II listed within Wellington, Burleigh, Tavistock and Exeter streets.
Cllr Robert Davis, deputy leader of Westminster city council, said of the London project: “This is one of the finest schemes we have considered for Covent Garden in years”.
The plans, which were announced earlier this year, will see the Oscar-winning actor team up with property firm Capco and BD Hotels to open The Wellington Hotel in London’s Covent Garden.
While the Tribeca-situated Greenwich hotel has been successful, Nobu in Manila was named one of the worst luxury hotels of 2015. The hotel will attract visitors from all over the world.
De Niro is by no means the only Hollywood star to take on the role of hotelier – Clint Eastwood, Richard Gere and Elizabeth Taylor have all made forays into the business – and Leonardo DiCaprio is set to open an eco-friendly resort in Belize in 2018.
Such ventures are not always a success, however. Rigsby’s Guest House, which was mainly owned by Rupert Grint, was closed due to poor sales.
