Robert Durst Pleads Guilty to Gun Charge
It was not clear if Durst was sincerely confessing, but authorities in Los Angeles reportedly said the documentary had played a role in their decision to seek the multimillionaire’s arrest for Berman’s murder.
Robert Durst, the Westchester real estate heir, has pleaded guilty to illegal gun possession.
Durst is the prime suspect in the murder of his friend Susan Berman, who was killed in 2000.
Durst, 72, could be sentenced to seven years and one month in prison under his plea agreement, followed by three years of supervised release.
McMahon, the prosecutor, described the murder prosecution against Durst in Los Angeles as “a tough case”. It also includes an agreement with Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office not to prosecute Durst on any state charges as long as his 85-month sentence holds up. Durst’s attorneys have said in the past the charges are spurious and that they are confident they will be vindicated in court. He was found in a hotel in New Orleans with a weapon and $117,000 in cash.
Although Durst waived extradition from the start, he will remain in Louisiana at least until after his sentencing.
As well as the weapons charge, Durst was charged with the murder of Berman in 2000.
Investigators had reopened the case of Kathleen Durst’s 1982 disappearance when Berman was killed.
According to the New York Times, Durst is worth than $100 million and used some of the country’s best defense lawyers in the past. If the judge accepts the sentence, then it is up to the Bureau of Prisons to decide where Durst will serve it.
Durst claimed that Black’s death was an accident that occurred while the two men grappled over a gun. The maximum would have been 10 years and a $250,000 fine. His arrest came as the cable network HBO was broadcasting a six-part documentary about him, which turned him into a notorious national figure. Durst’s voice was captured on a microphone after the interview saying he had “killed them all”.
