Robert Durst Pleads Guilty to New Orleans Gun Charge
Durst’s attorney said he will ask the judge to designate a federal prison close to Los Angeles so Durst can be transported there for the murder trial. Durst was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm after a search of his New Orleans hotel room last March turned up a handgun. “Robert Durst did not kill Susan Berman and we want to prove it”.
Durst’s plea was in connection with a charge of illegally carrying a.38-caliber revolver after being convicted of a felony. Durst was formally arrested early on the day of the broadcast.
The show chronicled several police investigations of the multimillionaire, including the 2003 dismemberment killing of a male neighbor in Texas for which he was acquitted of murder, and the 1982 disappearance in NY of his wife, Kathleen.
He also is being sued by his missing wife’s family for 0 million.
The defense team and prosecution will grapple over similarities between Durst’s two handwritten letters that incriminated his involvement with Berman’s murder, as well as his murder confession on tape, when they get to Los Angeles.
Durst’s lawyers were so confident that the federal judge in the case, Helen G. Berrigan, would throw out the evidence that they never formalized a proposed plea agreement that would have meant a sentence of up to 27 months, according to lawyers briefed on the negotiations who were not authorized to discuss them.
At this time, HBO was airing a six-part documentary about Durst called “The Jinx”. In the final episode, Durst is caught muttering what sounded like a confession to the killings into a microphone off-camera.
Afterwards, when by himself in the bathroom but with his mic still attached and recording, Durst talked to himself, stating “What the hell did I do?”
