Robert Griffin III to be released by the Cleveland Browns
The Cowboys had other ideas as they chose to change their minds and hold on to him right before the free agency period began.
The Browns are now stuck with Osweiler and the massive contract he signed as a free agent last season.
Osweiler gives the Browns more options and it’s possible they could use him to entice another team to make a trade.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who was one of the first to break the deal, clearly explained the uncommon deal on his Facebook page.
Brock Osweiler is headed to Cleveland. With Osweiler’s contract, the Browns still have $80 million in free cap, so the contract really wont effect them too much.
In other words, what Cleveland did was buy themselves a second-round draft pick in next year’s draft by agreeing to take on the $16 million of Osweiler’s contract.
“The move clears out millions in salary-cap space for Houston to intensify efforts to sign former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, per sources”. But according to Cleveland.com’s Terry Pluto, the Browns never had any plans to dump Osweiler shortly after acquiring him, and more than that, the team preferred Osweiler to Griffin, partly because Griffin struggled to stay healthy.
Of Osweiler’s 488 career completions, 47 went for at least 20 yards, but just eight led to gains of 40 or more yards.
The team is in no way committing to him as the starter of the future, and at best he is a highly-paid backup who serves as an upgrade over Robert Griffin III.
The Browns continue to stack assets as they now own seven draft picks in the first four rounds of the next two drafts.
The Browns will release the quarterback on Friday, a person familiar with the move told USA TODAY Sports’ Tom Pelissero.
Texans did NOT trade Osweiler 2 get Romo.
