Robert Upshaw Signs With Lakers, Chris Douglas
The 7-foot Upshaw played five games for the Lakers at this year’s Las Vegas Summer League, averaging 1.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 11.5 minutes per game.
The Lakers signed Huertas as a potential depth option at point guard and if he plays well in camp, he could be a good option to mix in with Russell and Clarkson.
The Lakers and Robert Upshaw have been talked about for months, like a Hollywood couple in the tabloids, but finally we can officially link the two together as a deal’s been done that could have Upshaw playing games soon at Staples Center.
The Lakers now have 18 players on the roster and 12 have guaranteed contracts. Upshaw is 21 years old and has an enormous amount of upside, but he has had off-the-court issues in the past which made many teams shy away from him at draft time.
Upshaw transferred to Washington after being dismissed from Fresno State after his freshman season for a violation of team rules.
Upshaw was undrafted as an early entry candidate for the 2015 National Basketball Association draft after his sophomore season at Washington. The team is also considering adding up to two additional players, including veteran forward Metta World Peace. He was dismissed from both schools for violating team rules.
Still, a training camp invite is just that, and the Lakers are expected to bring roughly 20 players – the maximum number of players a team can hold in the offseason – to Hawaii. The worst-case scenario for Upshaw though is likely a season in the D-League with the Lakers affiliate, which wouldn’t be the worst thing for him.
