Robin Williams’ widow opens up about his diagnosis with Lewy Body Dementia
She has revealed she understands why he did it.
LBD is a disease that involves fluctuations in cognition, hallucinations, REM Sleep Behavior Disorder and sensitivity to neuroleptic (anti-psychotic) drugs as symptoms, says the Lewy Body Dementia Association. She said she was hoping that she could help those who suffer from LBD, after her husband was diagnosed of the unusual illness. The depression he was suffering from largely stemmed from his very grim prognosis.
On Tuesday, Susan revealed Robin had “maybe three years” to live at the time of the his passing, and she’s now explained he was on the verge of having to move into a treatment facility as he could no longer be at home. He was away from them for eight years.
The manner in which her husband’s possessions were handled after his death, Susan said, was “incomprehensible” to her – and when she raised objection, she was “stonewalled good and hard”.
Mr Williams’ grown children from previous marriages accused her of “adding insult to a awful injury” by trying to change a trust agreement.
“I just wanted to see my husband“. It’s just that this disease was faster than us and bigger than us, ‘ Susan said. Lewy body dementia, a form of Parkinson’s, is the same disease that afflicted radio icon Casey Kasem, who died in June 2014 after a drawn-out drama that saw his second wife and his three eldest children fighting over his care.
Robin Williams: Is Parkinson’s Disease Linked to Suicide?
“After a year of digging into what killed my husband, finding out all about Lewy body disease, lo and behold, one of the symptoms, their vision is affected”.
She said: “Every inch of this house”.
“I think they’re just very happy to have this behind them.”
She got emotional as she described his mindset before his suicide and the reason she believed he took his own life.
Susan was 20 minutes from home and she said she remembers screaming out Robin’s name as she drove home.
Recalling what she was told by lawyers she said they told her: “Eventually once we’ve gone through it all, you can decide – tell us which items are yours”. “You don’t know exactly what you’re looking at“.
Susan finally reached an out-of-court settlement with her stepchildren early last month.
“I got to tell him, I forgive you, with all my heart”. At one point, she found him at the bathroom sink with blood all over a towel and a cut on his head.
Robin Williams stars as Simon Roberts in THE insane ONES which airs Thursday 9:00 – 9:30 PM, ET/PT on the CBS Television Network.
