Robot shows self-awareness during experiment
According to Dr. Bringsjord, “Floridi’s challenge, which we refer to as “KG4, ‘ requires that a robot have a form of genuine self-understanding… a human-level justification/proof to accompany the behavior, in which the robot employ a correlated to the personal pronoun ‘I””. Surprisingly, one of the robots reacted and answered that he hasn’t been given the dumbing pill.
Have you even wondered that the technological advances taking place each day are capable of replacing humans with robots that are as intelligent, if not more?
The significance of the experiment is that it shows that robots can be developed to have some human qualities such as self awareness and deduction.
Devoted to finding out, Bringsjord explained that this type of cognitive programming, called psychometric AI, offers untold opportunities for growth in learning about ourselves and how helpful robots might be in the future. All three of the robots were told that they received a “dumbing pill” that will render their ability to speak null, which was essentially pushing the button for “silent”. If the robot is able to speak, that means there’s no way it could have actually been given the pill. The robots were then prompted to state which of them was not given the pill, one replied by stating that it does not know.
While this may not demonstrate the highly controversial artificial intelligence that researchers are chasing down, it does demonstrate some very basic reasoning skills. For example, with the surge of autonomous cars on the road thanks to Google, someday an autonomous vehicle may be able to actively make a decision which could potentially avoid injuries and save lives, with an to ability to critically think in crash scenarios. The robot’s development began with the launch of Project NAO in 2004.
The next step for Rensselaer A.I.
Furthermore, induction is a hard test to pass. Yet, the Nao robot that wasn’t silenced was able to understand it hadn’t been administered the “dumbing pill” as long as it was able to speak.
It showed a great advancement in the process of providing them self-awareness and capabilities to solve problems that might help in the future.
