Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: NWA, Cheap Trick, Chicago Inducted

Among those who didn’t make the cut are Chic, Janet Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, and the Smiths.
Four of the five acts that will be inducted now tour in some fashion.
Following the significant box office success of the biopic movie Straight Outta Compton back in the summer, the pioneering hip-hop group N.W.A. has been recognised with an induction on the first year of its eligibility. Members of the general public are allowed to combine for one vote each year – a process that takes place online beginning a few years ago.
They will be inducted on April 8th during a ceremony at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
“It’s everything that kind of eluded us in a lot of ways when we were coming up”, N.W.A.’s Ice Cube told Rolling Stone, speaking about the honor. We’re extremely excited and happy for that.
Although the official criteria for induction is an artist’s influence upon the art and craft of popular music – not sales – the Hall in recent years has increasingly found room for fan favorites that had been passed over by Hall voters.
The 31st class was selected by 800-plus members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s voting committee. “I think that just like any new music, [hip-hop] borrows from the music that’s already there”, he said. That avoids the problem.
