Rock icon David Bowie ‘won’t have a funeral’
The news of the 69-year-old’s death was posted on the singer’s social media pages on Monday night, saying Bowie had died after an 18-month battle with cancer.
David Bowie sadly passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2016 after a long battle with liver cancer. “Like an oddball or a freak… his music was always inspiring but seeing him live set me off on a journey that for me I hope will never end”. Chairman of the Brit Awards Max Lousada said: “Naturally, we wish to honour his extraordinary life and work at the forthcoming Brit awards and pay a fitting tribute to one of our greatest icons”.
Ivo van Hove, director of Bowie’s musical, said The Man Who Fell to Earth was “writing on his deathbed”.
“Blackstar” was released on his 69th birthday last Friday, only days before his death, and is projected to sell about 130,000 total equivalent album units, according to Billboard. I’ve got scars that can’t be seen.
The enigmatic star withdrew from the limelight in his later years, quietly releasing two final albums in 2013 and last week. Van Hove says Bowie told him about his illness during the early stages of working on the show, in November 2014, and asked him to keep the information secret.
Elton has made a decision to dedicate one of these new songs to David. It features the haunting track Lazarus, which poignantly opens with the lyrics: “Look up here, I’m in Heaven”.
The video for Lazarus, which depicts a bandaged Bowie in a hospital bed, is poignantly foreboding.
She said it was the suddenness of Bowie’s death that had affected people.
Memorial concert New York’s Carnegie Hall is to host a memorial concert for Bowie on March 31st. Bowie died in his New York City home, surrounded by his loved ones, so there’s a good chance that the funeral will be held in Manhattan.
