Rockies recall reliever Rex Brothers from minors
Grilli left game and was taken from the field on a medical cart.
Grilli suffered the injury in the ninth inning of the Braves’ 3-2 loss to the Rockies on Saturday. 305 with 22 RBIs in his past 36 games.Gonzalez has three three-hit games in the past week, and the Rockies have won the first three games of the series and five in a row overall against Atlanta. Gonzalez slugged his ninth homer since June 1 on Saturday and comes into Sunday’s home game with the Atlanta Braves batting.
David Aardsma relieved Grilli (3-4) and hit center fielder Charlie Blackmon, a North Gwinnett grad, with an 0-and-2 pitch.
The right-hander was injured while trying to cover first base on Colorado Rockies left fielder Drew Stubbs’ bouncer to first base in the ninth inning.
Johnson hit a bouncer to first baseman Ben Paulsen.
Miller got out of the first with only one run having crossed the plate, but he wouldn’t be so lucky in the fourth. Friedrich retired shortstop Andrelton Simmons on a fly to short center and struck out catcher Ryan Lavarnway to end the threat. The Rockies have lost six of their last seven games when scoring three or less runs. Arodys Vizcaino intentionally walked Arenado, but struck out Tulowitzki. Braves RHP Shelby Miller is 0-1 with a 9.39 ERA (eight runs in 7 2/3 innings) and has allowed 17 hits in two starts at Coors Field.
Brothers retired the first batter he faced, but then issued consecutive walks and was replaced by Rafael Betancourt. When it did, he made the most of his chances. He had two walks and seven strikeouts.
That would all the runs the home team would score in the game, but would be enough to give them the victory over the Braves on the last weekend of game before the All-Star break, which begins Monday with festivities in Cincinnati. The home run, it was a good pitch away Kelly Johnson was able to stay back and hit it to left. Two of the four hits De La Rosa surrendered left the yard.
Now the Braves lose their closer, who has recorded 24 saves while posting a 2.94 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and a 45/10 strikeout to walk ratio in 33.2 innings, and it hurts the team’s rebuilding process.
Lefty Aaron Laffey was designated for assignment on Saturday to make room for Brothers on the roster. Atlanta’s offense stranded the bases loaded twice: in the fourth and again in the eighth; Chris Johnson didn’t immediately run after hitting what was to be a sure double in the eighth, and was thrown out at second, changing the whole complexion of the inning.
