Rodgers urges Liverpool’s homesick players to relish
Liverpool wasted a host of chances as Norwich held them to a 1-1 draw at Anfield.
Danny Ings’ first Liverpool goal could not ease his side’s early-season woes as their winless run stretched to five games in a 1-1 draw with Norwich City on Sunday.
The German coach left Borussia Dortmund in the summer and is yet to decide on his next move, but some fans believe that his style of play would be well suited to Liverpool’s philosophy.
“We did our best and we’re happy we’ve come away with a point and I think it just shows the spirit of the group – we’re playing well at the moment but we’ve got to continue that”.
Norwich were workmanlike throughout but they should have conceded a second goal when Liverpool launched a rapid counter-attack only for Coutinho to be caught in two minds, eventually shooting weakly at Ruddy when he should have squared the ball to Ings. “We’ll have to learn lessons from that”.
Sturridge has undergone hip surgery in the USA , which curtailed his campaign last term, and had not featured this season before being recalled from the start for the visit of Alex Neil’s Norwich.
“There are more important things than football and I wanted to be there for the birth of my son, but it would have hurt to miss the game“, he said. That’s what I always do.
“To get a goal as well was obviously a very special day for me and something to tell my little boy when he’s older”, Martin said. If Christian Benteke’s hamstring injury keeps him sidelined, then Ings is nailed on to start.
His energy offered a liveliness up front the side had been lacking and he scored less than three minutes after coming on and nearly snatched a victor late on.
Slotted: Danny Ings notches his debut goal… “That will do his confidence good“, added Mignolet, who is likely to be rested to give Adam Bogdan his debut in this week’s Capital One Cup tie at home to League Two Carlisle.
“We have set a standard but we have lads who put a real shift in”.
Anfield’s USA based hierarchy don’t want to pull the plug on Rodgers, the man they went for following Kenny Dalglish’s sacking but they know the Ulsterman’s critics are growing.
“But I thought in particular in the second half, there were a lot more signs of our fluency and creativity”.
