Rodney Harrison blasts Jeff Fisher over dirty plays
That’s the organization that elected to hire Ken Whisenhunt in January 2014. He also turned out to be the guy who won three of 23 games before being sacked last week.
The beauty of Zimmer is that what you see is what you get. There is no act, no attempt to be smooth and no attempt to act like he’s anything other than a guy who loves coaching football. He has suffered between six and 10 of them over the course of his career, depending on how much you trust the NFL’s official figures. Fisher said he was about to congratulate Zimmer, “and he was gone”.
After St. Louis Rams safety Lamarcus Joyner knocked out Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater with a late hit during Sunday’s game, Harrison said that the action was “typical of Jeff Fisher-type teams”.
Sunday, Zimmer was refreshingly unfiltered in an over-filtered league.
Fisher wasted no time at his weekly press conference responding to Harrison’s accusation.
Zimmer was still steaming shortly after Blair Walsh hit a 40-yard field to win the game in overtime, and as he crossed the field and met up with Rams coach Jeff Fisher, Zimmer stuck out his hand to Fisher but barely looked at him or said anything, breezing by in obvious disgust.
“Mike’s and my handshake was very short”, Fisher added. “He didn’t say a word”. I went out to congratulate him. And the same Harrison who later said the Rams should thank him for ending Green’s season because they went on to win the Super Bowl with Kurt Warner at quarterback. I understand that, but you also need to control your emotions after a game and go look at the tape and then adjust accordingly. Head coach Jeff Fisher said, “Matt was productive”. It might be possible to give a few people the benefit of the doubt on something like this, but given the fact that Fisher feels comfortable making excuses for Joyner (and, by extension, the human porta-potty that coordinates his defense), it doesn’t appear we can put him into that category.
It’s Welker’s choice, and it’s not our place to judge him, even if coming back on a light one-year deal to a team unlikely to contend for a title seems questionable. The grit is Zimmer’s identity beginning to poke through the soil. It had nothing to do with anyone’s opinion.
“Lamarcus made a decision to go hit the quarterback prior to Teddy initiating the slide”, Fisher said. “People have doubted me for a long, long time”. Bottom line. I’m not going to get into any details, because I’m just not going there. Since 2000, it’s been a privilege and honor for me to be on the competition committee.
There was nothing wrong with this approach because this is a league where you use what works. With concussions, livelong suffering from injuries and a growing number of parents who aren’t letting their children play the game because of these things, this kind of play gets at the heart of what could threaten the game’s very existence. But, like too many players under those coaches over the years, he either didn’t know where to draw the line, or he knew and didn’t care.
Addressing whether he thought Bridgewater was targeted or whether that would be “taking it one more step”, Peterson said, “I think maybe taking it one more step”.
Joyner undoubtedly will receive notification of a fine for the hit from the National Football League this week.
