Rodriguez’s no-hit bid broken up after replay reversal
Eduardo Rodriguez continued his resurgent post-All-Star Break run for the Red Sox in Oakland on Sunday, but his start didn’t come without a little intrigue – and potential controversy.
Eduardo Rodriguez threw 7 2/3 no-hit innings before allowing an infield single in the bottom of the eighth on a grounder that bounced off his foot. Replays clearly showed Semien was safe, just as Rodriguez knew they would.
After a short conference, the call was reversed, effectively ending Rodriguez’s no-hit bit. Left fielder Brock Holt fumbled the ball trying to pick up the band Valencia was waved home by third base coach Ron Washington. The Toronto Blue Jays (77-59), a victor at Tampa Bay earlier Sunday, moved a game ahead of the Red Sox. He is just 1-3 but has compiled a 2.73 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 52.2 innings.
Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel entered the game in relief of Rodriguez and walked the leadoff batter, Danny Valencia.
Ryan Madson (5-4) pitched the ninth for the win.
The defeat ended a three-game winning streak for the Red Sox, who had blitzed the A’s 16-2 and 11-2 in the first two games of the series.
A’s starter Kendall Graveman was almost as good.
A’s Manager Bob Melvin challenged the call, which was overturned after a quick review.
The 23-year-old southpaw explained in the clubhouse after the game, as seen on NESN’s “Red Sox Final” after the game. Jake Smolinski broke that one up with a double, then got hit by a pitch in the exact same situation Sunday with one out in the sixth.
Davis and Semien had the only two hits for the A’s, who haven’t been no-hit since July 13, 1991, a stretch of 4.032 games that’s the longest in the majors.
The game was delayed for about five minutes.
His glove came through when it mattered behind Rodriguez: Moncada snagged Billy Butler’s hard liner to start the seventh.
Red Sox: Rookie OF Andrew Benintendi (left knee sprain) played catch for the first time and has taken some dry swings. Red Sox manager John Farrell announced before the game that RHP Clay Buchholz will start Tuesday at San Diego in place of RHP Steven Wright (sore shoulder). Kimbrel (2-4) took the loss.
Athletics: RHP Raul Alcantara will make his major league debut Monday against the visiting Los Angeles Angels.
