Roger Federe: First Man to Win 300 Grand Slam Matches
Roger Federer has now won 300 Grand Slam matches. The five-time Grand Slam champion rued the second set despite still progressing.
When Dimitrov took the second set to level the match, suddenly the memory of Federer exiting last year’s Australian Open in the third round came roaring back. Like when I reached 1,000 past year, it was a big deal for me. “You look deeper into it, where it’s all happened and how”. “So it’s very nice, I’m very happy”. The four-set win, however, was Federer’s first against the rising star in a Slam.
After 17 Grand Slam titles, the most weeks spent at world No. 1 and a staggering 67 major appearances, it’s hard to fathom that there are still more records for Roger Federer to amass.
However, it is notable that the Swiss has won each of his previous three consecutive encounters with Goffin while dropping only one set and has reached five finals and five semi-finals at Melbourne Park over the previous 11 seasons, winning four times.
“I played a quality player who took out Federer last year here and who has been on the tour for many years, ” Djokovic said. He sought courtside treatment from the trainer several times during the match. I was hoping to have a better result.
Federer struck an ace to seal the first set 6-4.
Williams next plays Margarita Gasparyan, who beat Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-4.
Maria Sharapova (5), Russia, def. Lauren Davis, United States, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-0.
The 300-win mark is yet another milestone in Federer’s career.
“Wow. I’ve won 600 matches?”
In his on-court interview with the American great, Federer also referred to himself as a veteran.
Goffin praises Thiem for his sportsmanship: “I would like to thank my friend @ThiemDomi for the act of fairplay he made this morning”.
“I think a year ago was a learning curve for him”, Federer said.
A busy day of action helped take the focus off corruption claims which have overshadowed the year’s first Grand Slam after a report said players had been suspected of fixing matches but never faced action.
Indeed, the most impressive aspect of Federer’s convincing two hour, 40-minute progression was that it was a fifth straight win over Dimitrov, who has always been considered a likely successor to the 34-year-old champion.
Federer weathered a second set storm from Grigor Dimitrov before slapping down the Bulgarian challenger 6-4 3-6 6-1 6-4 to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open.
In other matches, Japan’s Kei Nishikori beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ousted fellow Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/4).
When Grigor Dimitrov ended Andy Murray’s reign as Wimbledon champion with a no-nonsense quarter-final defeat at the All England Club in 2014, it supposedly heralded the arrival of the “generation next” in men’s tennis.
“I will enjoy myself first because I beat No. 3 in the world”, she said.
There was a full house on Margaret Court Arena for the match, including a big section of Japanese supporters waving flags, while matches on uncovered outside courts were delayed because of rain. Seven doubles matches have been postponed.
