Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in action
Djokovic’s 6-3 6-4 victory over Roger Federer made him the first man ever to win the season-ending tournament four times in a row and left one of his biggest rivals where they have all been this year, trailing helplessly in his wake.
Djokovic displayed an imperious show throughout the year, winning three Grand Slam titles and taking his singles tally to 10.
Fans came out to London’s O2 Arena expecting a classic as Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer faced off for the second time this week at the ATP World Tour Finals. Novak Djokovic is the number one player in the world, and Roger Federer is probably the second best, although Andy Murray could also make an argument for that spot.
“I’m obviously very proud to have these achievements with my team”, he said.
Tennis World brings to you this year’s best matches’ podium of the ATP Finals!
He won two of their three matches this year, including their last encounter in the US Open semi-finals, where Federer went on to lose to Djokovic.
Funnily enough, it was Federer who was the last man to beat Djokovic in the Cincinnati Masters final – a fact which underlines the extent to which this season has seen them more often than not facing off for the biggest titles, not least in the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open.
Djokovic said: “This season definitely stands out”.
“Even though it’s never fun being on the not-winning side, it’s good to be playing at all”, Federer said, in reference to his last-minute withdrawal from last year’s final. He played a great match against Rafa… and I’m sure it will be a fantastic meeting. Djokovic is as strong as an ox, as supple as a gymnast and there is not an identifiable weakness in his game. Then my serve has been really working very consistent, very well throughout the year more or less.
“I still believe his confidence is slightly higher than mine with the amount of success he’s had this year”. From return of serves to first serves and second serves, everything went their way and were more effective to put the match completely in their favour.
Federer threatened to spoil Djokovic’s closing party by inflicting a straight sets defeat in the group stages of the ATP World Tour Finals.
The Swiss needed to be clinical but forehand and backhand errors saw him miss both break points in the first set, and Djokovic capitalised.
“I am enjoying every moment on the court, I cherish every moment after dreaming of it as a kid”, he said.
Federer held the opening game and established an early threat with Djokovic on serve – the world No 1 saved break point – but the first two games would prove the most competitive of the set. Doesn’t need much, you know. Armed with such recent intelligence the Serb was always going to come much better prepared for the final. That’s what I going to try to keep doing. But Djokovic wore down his opponent and the 17-time Grand Slam double faulted on his second break point. Regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s match, the season will still be the best that I had.
“Again, I’ve played maybe the best tennis of the season in China”.
Djokovic, who won the event for the first in 2008, has now collected the season finale five times and surpassed Ivan Lendl’s 1987 feat.
