Roger Federer calls for changes after Serena Williams fine
Do you ever see Roger Federer lose his temper when losing?
As a fan of tennis, and an even bigger fan of the queen herself, I am as disappointed as anyone.
A double standard exists in professional tennis. I don’t think that threat will break Serena. So not only did Serena cheat, but she lied.
The first violation was a warning on coaching.
According to PewDiePie Serena was wrong and she abused the referee verbally. She has become a symbol of feminism – an intersectional feminism that people look up to but also can’t quite seem to understand. According to the rules, any communication between a player and coach-be it audible or visible-can be construed as coaching.
With the microphone on for the tv audience and everyone in the stadium to hear, she accused Carlos Ramos of being a “thief” and a ‘liar’. It was not, however.
Williams was penalized for arguing repeatedly with a male umpire during the final. This second violation cost her a point. In August, French player Benoît Paire smashed two rackets in frustration at the Citi Open, receiving only a point penalty.
In his latest video PewDiePie calls Serena Williams a bully. The chair umpire then judged her outburst as a third violation, which cost Williams an entire game as a penalty. Patrick Mouratoglou has reportedly admitted that he coached Serena Williams from the stand. However, this is obsolete. A desperate Williams who melted down from an overwhelming mix of emotions and a chair umpire who strictly adhered to the rules – I believe that both of them exhausting all of their energy led to the tragic ending to the story. She has never been afraid to chew out an umpire for a call she deemed incorrect or smash her racquet after a loss.
After the match, tennis legends rushed to Twitter to show their support for Williams. In response to McEnroe’s comments she said that Williams might end up doing a little better than 700th, but she was emphatic that neither Williams nor any other woman could compete with the men. The match turned out to be one of the freakish finals in the tennis history.
Everyone knows across all spectrum of the sport that’s going to happen. However, when Williams was given her award for being a finalist, she opted out of answering questions and instead congratulated the younger tennis player, silencing the angry crowd. During a break in a game, Cornet left the court to change shirts.
Ohanian had remained silent until last week when he took to twitter to publicly chastise Australian paper The Herald Sun for their “racist and misogynistic” depiction of Williams in a cartoon they published. She received a code violation for this. Rafael Nadal regularly rips his shirt off after winning matches. Heck, she isn’t even mentioned in your column. But if they have real grievances, there are proper guidelines and procedures to follow.
Serena has proven true the old adage that you must be twice as good to be half as respected and three times as good if you are a Black woman. “Women are treated differently in most arenas of life”.
“I’ve said far worse”, McEnroe said in an interview with ESPN when talking about the Williams incident.
