Roger Federer chases more history at Wimbledon
Rather than his expected quarter-final foe Djokovic, American Sam Querrey blocks his path to a second Wimbledon semi-final, having reached the last four in 2014. In the victory, Raonic won 73 of 92 first set points and racked up 53 winners and 44 unforced errors.
The Canadian broke Querrey three times, including in the final game to end the contest. He’s a very capable volleyer and against Querrey, and he showed how effective his backhand slice approach can be.
Wasn’t working; got dirtier after a brief rain-delay consultation with his grass-advisor John McEnroe, who disappeared from his seat in Raonic’s box in the third set.
“This is a great day indeed”, said Federer who for the 10th time in his career came back to win a match erasing a two-set deficit.
“I’ve looked to other people to really try to help me, try to get the most out of me, because I think that would be my biggest regret if I didn’t do everything I could”, Raonic said.
Milos Raonic prefers playing his tennis like a Canadian lumberjack, axing down mighty serves and swinging away forehands to leave opponents toppling under his brute force. He really didn’t miss a volley today.
With no Novak Djokovic in his way, like a colossi standing astride the top quarter of the men’s draw. Raonic said he has always had the physical ability to do it, but earlier in his career, he would not have had the perspective of what he needed to do in those moments.
Querrey had taken the third set after breaking Raonic for the only time to go up 5-4, then serving it out with an ace on set point.
The seven-time champion won the third set of his quarterfinal match on Centre Court 6-3 after losing the first two to the ninth-seeded Croat. Goffin, ranked and seeded 11th, is clearly no slouch.
Once again, Raonic’s risky serve was on display in the match that took three hours two minutes to complete.
“It wasn’t going well for me, so for me it was about staying in the match”, Federer said. A five set battle with Lukas Rosol in the first round, plus a pair of straight wins over strong players Thomaz Bellucci and Nicolas Mahut see him in good touch for this match. Raonic is at his best in tiebreaks with a tour-leading 20-5 record in 2016.
Raonic won his first three matches here without dropping a single set and displayed some impressive mental toughness by fighting back from two sets down to beat Belgium’s David Goffin Monday in the Round of 16.
When a tournament is finished I’ll reflect on it as a whole and speak with my team. “To achieve those things, you have to face off against the best players at the best tournaments”, Raonic said. This was also his 80th match win at Wimbledon, which equals Jimmy Connors’ record.
