Roger Federer wins 300th Grand Slam singles match
Roger Federer admits that it is “very special” to have won 300 Grand Slam matches following his triumph over Grigor Dimitrov in the third round of the Australian Open.
Despite being the first man to notch 300 match wins at Grand Slam tournaments, Roger Federer found success to be a long and winding journey.
“When I reached 1000, it was a big deal for me”.
The 28-year-old, five-time major victor is playing her 13th Australian Open since 2003 so she knew what to expect when she lost concentration in the second set despite being up and break and 30-love.
Defending champions and top-ranked Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic easily came through their night matches.
“You got to perform difficulty, actually harder today nowadays it appears as though”, Federer told journalists when questioned what he may create to some senior edition of herself.
Williams won three majors – the Australian and French Opens and Wimbledon – past year which took her to within one of Steffi Graf’s long-time record of 22. “Hopefully with each match, I can just do better”.
The 34-year-old Federer becomes the oldest person to reach the round of 16 in the Australian Open.
The Bulgarian, who has been nicknamed “Baby Fed” for possessing a game akin to Federer, was shown that his style of play was still rough around the edges as he was beaten 6-4 3-6 6-1 6-4 by the Swiss master on Friday. He noted how he liked the renovation the No. 2 stadium has had a roof installed since his last outing there.I played a quality player who took out Federer last year here and who has been on the tour for many years, Djokovic said.
Yesterday, he was not at his most fluent best but was still too good for Grigor Dimitrov, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the last 16, having lost in the third round 12 months ago. It felt like Kyrgios’ antics were being watched more than his tennis half the time, but all in all the controversial Aussie kept things tame (by his standards). He faces a tougher proposition next: Federer.
Federer, however, simply lifted a gear, taming an occasionally wayward forehand before speeding away to set up a clash with another young gun in Belgian 15th seed David Goffin.
The women’s side will hope for another session like Day 5 where some of the seeds finally start to win the matches they should.
Sharapova, a four-time finalist, advanced with a 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-0 win over Lauren Davis before she was reminded of the milestone.
Up next for Djokovic is 14 seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon, who knocked off Argentina’s Federico Delbonis 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.
Responding to questions about his elbow, which required medical treatment during the latter stages of the match against Federer, Dimitrov said: “It’s just a little bit sore”.
Last year’s WTA Newcomer of the Year beat 28th-seed Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 4-6 11-9.
