Roger Staubach voted Navy QB Keenan Reynolds first for Heisman Trophy
With perfection at stake, Keenan Reynolds ended his Navy career with a clean sweep against Army. Each ship is detailed on one of seven hand-painted helmets that each player will wear, assigned by position.
“The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity”. That play was this pass from Chris Carter, that Poe hauled in for the six points and the lead.
Navy took its first lead, 7-3, on its second possession with two runs from Reynolds, including a 58-yarder for a touchdown.
According to oddsmakers at MyBookie.ag, Navy is the clear favorite in this game, as the Midshipmen are getting odds of -21.5 points against Army.
“They’re a good second half team”, he said.
Army had a lead.
The Black Knights (2-10) had momentum swing their way heading into halftime following a 39-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Edgar Poe.
“I don’t know how many freshmen we played tonight, but we played 24 in our last game (against Rutgers)”.
In short, it’s because voters displayed a clear preference for Henry, McCaffrey and Watson over Reynolds and other candidates such as Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma, Leonard Fournette of LSU and Ezekiel Elliott of Ohio State. Army QB Chris Carter completed 9-of-15 passes for 208 yards and a score with a pick, but was held to 18 yards on 22 carries.
Navy sacked Carter three times and in the second half appeared to rattle him. Navy looked primed to run the clock out, but the Army defense forced the Midshipmen to punt. He set a Division I record with his 85th career rushing touchdown and finished this season with 2,306 total yards and 28 total touchdowns. Army’s defense stiffened, especially in the second half.
What the loss means for Army: The part of the losing streak Army will struggle with most is that it’s had several opportunities for wins over the last several years.
“We have young talent that is going into the offseason and won’t be as young next year”.
“We’re not going wait too long, that’s for sure”, he said. He’s like, ‘I don’t care about it, ‘ but it meant a lot for him, and it really meant a lot for us. Again, it just comes down to late turnovers and Army’s inability to finish drives.
The win sent Navy to the Military Bowl later this month with a record of 10-2. Our coverage begins at Noon with Keith Mills hosting a special Army-Navy pregame. He said earlier in the week he would visit BYU on Monday.
Hours before leading the Midshipmen against arch-rival Army in the classic game, Niumatalolo appeared on ESPN’s College Gameday in Philadelphia with host Rece Davis and analyst Lee Corso.
“Well, Rece, I had several schools contact my agent and quite frankly I wasn’t that interested in them”, Niumatalolo said.
