Rogers Cup 2015: Andy Murray reflects on Montreal triumph
Andy Murray has been cut to 4/1 to win the US Open after ending his losing streak against Novak Djokovic to win the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
Murray, who dedicated the win to coach and new mother Amelie Mauresmo, said keeping his aggressive game-plan was key – as he kept his head in the deciding set. He denied Djokovic the chance at a 25th Masters trophy.
Djokovic came into Sunday’s final with a 13-1 record this season when a match went to a deciding set.
Winning the first set was vital for Murray, who lost the last eight matches to Djokovic after dropping the opening frame.
Andy Murray just beat Novak Djokovic to clinch the Rogers Cup title.
It is a stark contrast to past year, when Murray – still struggling for form after his 2013 back surgery – had to wait until October 31 to be sure of his spot at the O2 Arena, taking on a hectic schedule that saw him claim four titles in six weeks. Murray will line up against Djokovic after the top seed defeated France’s Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-4 in the other semi-final. With Murray’s streak-breaking win, he’s taken down Djokovic’s lead in the rivalry to 19-9. Chardy, who needed three hours and three tiebreaks to get past John Isner in the quarter-finals, got the match off to a shaky start when he handed Djokovic a break, with the help of a couple of double faults, to open the match.
According to the Guardian, “Andy Murray is going to be a father in February according to best estimates – which might inconvenience his participation in the Australian Open in January – and everybody is happy for Britain’s best player and his wife, Kim”. “He was always making me play an extra shot, and putting a lot of pressure on my second serve”. Despite Murray’s recent losses, many people believed that he could still take on and beat Djokovic.
“But I also have the experience of playing in finals of the biggest events”.
“I don’t know the answer because we haven’t obviously discussed that yet”, he said. “But I fought well and stayed calm in the important moments of the third set”, Murray said. I would say the margins were so fine. “Hopefully I’ll be able to rise to the occasion and play the best match of the week”.
‘I need to make sure I recover well from this.
