Rogers rejoins Australia but still a doubt for Edgbaston
The England quicks bowled wide outside off stump to Smith for much of his double-century in the last Ashes Test at Lord’s, trying to induce a careless waft in the hopes of finding his outside edge.
The 37-year-old left-hander was forced to retire on 49 not out on the fourth day of Australia’s 405-run second test victory against England at Lord’s, which levelled the series 1-1.
Australia opener Chris Rogers was back with the tourists Test squad on Friday and will undergo further medical assessment to determine his fitness to play in next week s third Ashes Test against England at Edgbaston.
“A lot has been written this week about it being the end of the world, like we’re losing 10-0”, Broad told Britain’s Daily Telegraph on Saturday.
“England have to have the wickets how they’re comfortable, India have the wickets how they’re comfortable, and we have what we have in Australia“, Clarke concluded.
“The atmosphere will be a little bit different at Edgbaston with our fans, so I can’t wait to get there and really express ourselves”, said Wood.
Mitchell Johnson took 6 for 80 at Lord’s, reviving memories of how the left-arm pacer captured 37 wickets during his side’s 5-0 home Ashes rout of England in 2013-14. Broad, however, felt the side was largely responsible for the way in which they were dismissed.
“So let’s just give it a good go and come back hard at Australia like they did at us”.
England has called up batsman Jonny Bairstow to replace first drop Gary Ballance in what is set to be the only change to the team that played at Lord’s.
Ian Bell moves up the order to bat at number three, followed by Joe Root, with Bairstow coming in at five.
“I think that’s the key, if we really express ourselves like we have done against New Zealand, then I’m sure we’ll come up with the right result, because we have great attacking players, a great overall squad”.
Meanwhile Broad said the fact the next two Tests were at the Midlands venues of Edgbaston and Nottingham’s Trent Bridge – where he plays county cricket for Nottinghamshire – would favour England.
Brukner said earlier in the week: “We are confident this is something we can manage in the lead-up to the third Test”.
