Rohith Vemula’s Mother Admitted to ICU with ‘Chest Pain’
“Prime Minister should stop this pretence of emotions and the expressions of words of sympathy”. He has a moral and a constitutional duty to take action.
The Telangana government which had remained silent on Rohith Vemula’s suicide finally responded on Saturday.
“BJP as a political party made statements which were insulting and hurtful”. Opposition parties and students have accused Irani of pressing the university for action against the Dalit students on a complaint by Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya.
“The situation has worsened among in the education arena ever since the HRD minister assumed her position among controversy”. The FIR, issued by the Gachibowli police station, now names Union labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya, BJP MLC Ramachandra Rao and university vice-chancellor Apparao Podile on charges of abetment to suicide and atrocities against a Dalit.
It has chose to continue the protest till all the culprits responsible for the death of Rohith and the injustice meted out to all the five Dalit research scholars are punished. “We are right in demanding that the PM take action”, he said.
An emotional Prime Minister Modi had expressed anguish at Vemula’s suicide and said that he felt the pain of the Dalit scholar’s family. Addressing the convocation at the BR Ambedkar University, Mr Modi said, “India has lost a son and I can imagine what his family must be going through”.
They, however, vowed to continue their agitation unless the Centre agreed to meet their other demands that include the expulsion of university vice-chancellor, Appa Rao Podile.
The University earlier also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 8 lakh to the family of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula who committed suicide on January 17. “We are in the process of drafting the legal document and finding out how to do it”, Dontha Prashanth, Vemula’s fellow activist and member of Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) that is leading the protests, told ET. They were also kept out of the hostel.
