Romelu Lukaku ‘back in business’ after ending goal drought in style
Romelu Lukaku ended his goal drought with a hat-trick to send Everton third in the Premier League with a 3-0 win at Sunderland.
Moyes, who managed the Toffees from 2003 until 2013, welcomes his former club to the Stadium of Light on Monday evening for the fourth Premier League game of the season.
“The gaffer asked us to raise the tempo because the tempo we played at in the first half suited Sunderland”, he said. “We lost a lot of easy balls, too many players were not on our level in possession”, he told Sky Sports.
It was the nature of the second-half collapse to Everton that caused most concern, with Sunderland torn apart by Lukaku – who twice scored from free headers on his way to bagging the matchday ball.
“We didn’t stop the crosses, didn’t defend the crosses, didn’t get in the right positions when they did come in”.
“I know it’s always hard for the manager because he was not selected for the national team and you take the player off after 45 minutes”.
“I was really disappointed with our first 45 minutes”.
Lukaku last scored for the Toffees back in March, but the Belgian worldwide came back with a bang, ending his 13-game goal-drought by knocking in an 11-minute hat-trick.
‘There was some doubt in his mind about not scoring for Everton but I told him the answer is always on the pitch and he showed his quality. a great performance, ‘ he added. We need more points and we are going to try to do that starting with Tottenham. I’m happy about the second half because the players by themselves showed what our level can be. “But play like we did in the first and we’ll finish somewhere between 10th and 13th”. Lukaku latched onto a well weighted through pass from Kevin Mirallas before firing into the bottom-left corner from the centre of the box.
The first goal of Romelu Lukaku’s hat-trick goal was his first for Everton in 14 games in all competitions.
“We got away with one not long before it. There were things where we looked liable to make an opportunity but if we didn’t get them we didn’t take them or there weren’t enough”.
“Lamine is an important player for this club and I made that clear to him from the outset”.
