Romo injury makes rookie Prescott sudden starter for Cowboys
DALLAS-The Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo’s season is in jeopardy after a MRI revealed that the quarterback has a broken bone in his back.
Jones referenced the time Tom Brady replaced Drew Bledsoe in 2001 and led the Patriots to a Super Bowl victory.
“I can’t imagine a scenario where Tony’s not our quarterback when he’s ready”, Jones said. “I don’t know if he thought it was going to happen this soon”.
In case you’re not familiar with this reference, Brady replaced Bledsoe early during the 2001 National Football League season and never relinquished the job to the veteran. I’m sure Tony’s aware of that. Prescott can’t carry this team like Romo has in the past, but the supporting cast is there for him to win with.
Now that may sound like an overly bullish prognostication for a team that relies so heavily on its veteran signal-caller, but the truth is the Cowboys are built on the foundation of a brutish offensive line. Dez Bryant is already a fan. At that point the team may be able to add a veteran quarterback who could get let go. It hurts bad. But I can tell you this time we’re not going to be sitting around worrying when Tony gets back.
Teams need to know their roster and play to its strengths; it’s quite possible that the Tony Romo injury will force the Cowboys to do just that by handing the ball to Ezekiel Elliott more often in the early going. But (insert necessary disclaimer) it’s the preseason. Prescott gains some valuable experience in Romo’s absence, which bodes well for the future when he actually does take over for Romo permanently.
Romo (back) is unlikely to return before mid-season, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports.
Then, Romo will have half a season to turn the Cowboys into contenders. Dallas regrouped and waited until end of the fourth round to scoop up the Mississippi State stud, whose importance intensified when backup Kellen Moore broke his ankle in the beginning of August.
