Ronaldo’s Portugal seeking rebound in Euro 2016 clash against Austria
Portugal vs Iceland LIVE, Euro 2016: Portugal take on Iceland in their Group F fixture.
Elsewhere, Iceland will take on Hungary in other Group F match, while Belgium will clash against Republic of Ireland in Group E game.
Iceland boss Lars Lagerback is remaining calm following his side’s landmark draw against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal on Monday, claiming that fine margins are likely to make the difference in the final reckoning in Group F.
Iceland had a chance to snatch it at the death with a free-kick from Sigurdsson but the resulting follow-up from Eidur Gudjohnsen went agonisingly wide. In fact, Hungary is now the top team in the group and Portugal is sitting in third.
Before taking himself off to the dressing room, Ronaldo shook hands very reluctantly with just one of Iceland’s footballers.
Hungary celebrated wildly at the final whistle.
The latest events follow Uefa opening disciplinary proceedings against Croatia following crowd trouble on Friday.
KATHMANDU: Birkir Saevarsson scored a late own-goal in 88th minute to give Hungary a 1-1 draw with Iceland in another European Championship game marred by crowd trouble.
But Saeversson was helpless with just two minutes to play, turning into his own net after substitute Nikolic had burst to the byline and cut the ball back for Adam Szalai, waiting to pounce if Iceland’s right-back had not intervened.
The goal was met with a series of firecrackers while flares rained down on the field.
– Five of Gylfi Sigurdsson’s last seven goals for Iceland have come from the penalty spot. Outside the ground, it had been a fiesta of noise and friendliness and though there had been a minor skirmish between Hungarian fans and stewards before the match – an incident quickly dampened down – the atmosphere was by no means as threatening as it had been the previous Saturday, that grudge match between England and Russian Federation. It was a narrow escape.
Hungary battled through to the European Championships but had to overcome Norway in a play-off in order to reach the competition.
Indeed, Johann Gudmundsson came even closer 20 minutes later when a tactical shoulder barge allowed him enough time and space away from his pursuer, Roland Juhasz, to get a shot away in the Hungarian six-yard box. The ball bobbled on towards Aron Gunnarsson who was cluttered by Tamas Kadar.
“The group is relaxed, and despite the draw we still feel good”, said Portuguese teenager Renato Sanches, who will team up with Alaba at Bayern next season after sealing a 35 million euro move from Benfica.
