Ronda Rousey on Loss to Holly Holm: ‘I Feel So Embarrassed’
Rousey, speaking for the first time since losing to Holm on November 15, told ESPN Magazine in an exclusive interview: “I just feel so embarrassed”. “It might be three to six months before I can eat an apple, let alone take an impact”.
Rousey confessed that she is “really sad” about the defeat, but is determined to bounce back and regain her status as the UFC’s leading female star. How I fought after that is such an embarrassing representation of myself. “I need to beat this chick”, she was quoted as saying. Who knows if I’m going to pop my teeth out or break my jaw or rip my lip open again.
Indeed, the fight was a far cry from Rousey’s usual performance on her way to becoming the sport’s biggest star and a growing personality in Hollywood.
“I got hit in that first round I cut my lip open and knocked a couple of my teeth loose”, Rousey said. “This will be the first time that she has competed without hydrating herself with an IV, so she’s made the decision to go ahead and defend her belt”. Then I just slept and pooped in the woods.
The former champ theorizes, “Physically, my body was refusing its own failures”. She notes that she refused to go to Australia to watch her daughter fight out of a sense of foreboding. I have to f***ing do it. It doesn’t matter. “But I still think there’s a desire there at some point”.
The initial plan was for Justino to shed the 10 pounds Rousey and the UFC was requiring in order to challenge Rousey for her UFC bantamweight crown.
It didn’t help matters that UFC president Dana White announced Thursday that Rousey will get an immediate rematch against Holm when she’s ready. That puts her under the same kind of USADA drug testing as UFC fighters, and USADA specifically bans rehydrating with IVs, something many fighters who cut a lot of weight have turned to in recent years.
