Rooney bullish on Champions League chances
Tuesday marked the tenth anniversary of George Best’s passing..
How they could have done with a sprinkling of magic from their most famous number seven on Wednesday night. When Sir Alex Ferguson would instruct his players to bombard the opposition goal?
After a quiet opening, Old Trafford came to light in the seventh minute.
Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with PSV leaves United a point behind the German group leaders, who they face on 8 December.
The current holder of that famous shirt was trying to rekindle memories of the Belfast boy. Yet this was surely United’s best chance of securing qualification.
United were creating plenty of chances, but buoyed by their profligacy, PSV came into the game.
United started off the brightest with some half chances with Bastian Schweinsteiger, Memphis Depay,Jesse Lingard and Morgan Schneiderlin having half opportunities inside half an hour.
“Now we have to win in Wolfsburg, which is hard, but our efforts in away games this year is better than last year”, added Van Gaal, whose side have lost three times away from home this campaign. Davy Propper juggled the ball before letting fly with a half-volley which De Gea saved.
Lingard was unmarked in the PSV box following the interval but his header zipped just wide of the post. The England Under-21 global thumped the turf. “And we have to do that also in the Champions League”.
While Louis van Gaal’s men have made a great start to the season, and now sit second in the Premier League table, their football has been less than exciting – no side in the top flight’s top eight have scored on fewer occasions than the Red Devils so far.
United’s lack of penetration.
A win here and United could have put themselves beyond PSV’s reach, leaving Van Gaal’s Dutch critics to worry about their own team’s performance and a mathematically slim chance of progressing at Wolfsburg’s expense.
Asked if United were ruthless enough, Rooney said: “No, we’re not”.
Us too. Unfortunately for all the United supporters out there, Louis van Gaal wasn’t around back then – so he clearly doesn’t recall that often thrilling style of play. (In the) s econd half I feel we showed a lack of composure which let ourselves down. Normally when I change it goes better but today it was not like that, so I was also very disappointed that my changes didn’t give an improvement. “We have won against them at home”.
“It’s not the way we wanted it to be before tonight’s game, but that’s the way it is and we believe we’re good enough to go out there are get the three points”.
