Rooney raises $1.5m from charity game
The United legend, who only needed one more goal to beat Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United goalscoring record, stepped up to take a free kick just outside Stoke’s penalty area in the 94th minute of the game.
While Rooney may not yet be as widely loved as the man he has replaced as United’s all-time top scorer, his impact is undeniable.
Also commenting on the donations, David Pastor, CEO of Claire House Children’s Hospice, said: “For every seriously ill child that Claire House now cares for, there’s one more that we can’t reach”.
Spain striker Fernando Llorente scored twice shortly after halftime to put Swansea in charge but Liverpool retaliated and two goals by Roberto Firmino dragged them level.
This is not the first time Rooney has usurped Charlton as a record holder, having also surpassed the World Cup winner’s England mark of 49 goals in 2015.
“To be leading goalscorer for United – overtaking Sir Bobby – and for England is an incredible achievement”. It affected him, Mourinho said, “for too long, since the beginning of the season”.
Stoke manager Mark Hughes: “United for me, is always a huge game and one I love to do well in”.
Rooney joined United from Everton in 2004 for a reported fee of £25.6million and famously scored a hat-trick on his debut in a 6-2 Champions League win, against Fenerbahce. “You couldn’t have chosen a Sunday better than this one to give it to him but now the moment is gone”.
The Frenchman wants out of the east London club and they have won two Premier League goals in a row since refusing to play. “I think it’s an wonderful achievement, something not to forget, and I think you should speak abut Wayne’s record today and tomorrow for 24 hours a day and then let him be a normal guy”. “It comes at exactly the most handsome moment you could chose”.
‘I’m a team player but records are important, ‘ Rooney added.
“We needed a little bit more quality in terms of ball retention, a couple of times we were a little bit frenetic with our passes out, but overall with our effort and what we produced I was fine with it”.
